Different Types of Concrete Pavers

The weather and climate of a certain area are important factors to consider whenever you’re choosing a material for pavers. Las Vegas’s climate is hot and arid for most of the year, which makes summers pipping hot. During the months of June and July, average daily temperatures range between 78 ℉ (26 ℃) and 104 ℉ (40 ℃).

With the close proximity of Las Vegas and Death Valley, one of the driest and hottest places in the U.S., precipitation is almost unheard of in the city. In fact, a rainless period could reach up to 2 years.

With the blistering heat and arid climate of Las Vegas, it is best to choose a highly durable and heat-resistant material for your paver needs. One of the more popular choices is concrete. Aside from providing a clean mid-century look to your landscape, concrete pavers are also known to reflect solar radiation and are more comfortable on bare feet.

Here are some of the frequently used types of concrete pavers.

Stamped Concrete Paver

A stamped concrete paver is a patterned and textured paver that can be molded to resemble stone, wood, tile, brick, flagstone, and various other designs—virtually any pattern you want is possible. Stamped concrete pavers have smooth surfaces and are great for large or oddly-shaped spaces. It is also incredibly durable and resilient against extreme temperatures.  Installation is fairly simple and maintenance is also inexpensive.

For a modern look, most homeowners go with stamped 24x24 concrete pavers for their driveway or patio. You can throw in some decomposed granite and gravel along with some succulents to complete the modern look.

Stenciled Concrete Paver

Unlike stamped concrete, stenciled concrete pavers can only be made when the concrete has finished drying. Stenciling concrete pavers involve the use of reusable non-adhesive stencils, which are usually made of paper, to create your chosen pattern. This process has made stenciling a much easier way to add designs and texture to your concrete pavers. Installation is also inexpensive as it doesn’t require much experience—you can even DIY it.

Stencil concrete pavers are great for larger areas, such as patios, and provide a variety of elaborate designs. If you want to go for a vintage look, Lisboa style stencil or Indian Bohemian stencil would be great.

Brushed Concrete Paver

This type of concrete paver is the simplest type. Brushed concrete pavers are made using a leveled layer of concrete and then running a brush with a stiff bristled broom along its surface. This process gives it a rougher finish which makes them ideal for pool decks and walkways due to their increased traction. Similar to stamped concrete, brushed concrete pavers can often last up to 30 to 40 years if properly maintained.

Stained Concrete Paver

Concrete pavers, whether brushed or stamped, come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors. However, some shades are naturally unavailable. This is where staining comes into play. You can stain your brushed or stamped concrete pavers if you wish to change their colors without having to replace them.

To create stained concrete pavers, you can simply use a concrete stain. It is a water-based product that you pour onto the surface of the pavers. Staining concrete pavers change the hue of the paver by neutralizing its underlying shade. For best results, make sure your concrete pavers are free of dirt, dust, or any unwanted stain. You may also combine stained concrete pavers with stenciled or imprinted border lines to enhance their overall look and feel.

Advantages of Using Concrete Pavers

The designing and planning process of any project normally takes the longest. Whenever you're considering a design, it is important to take into account the type of material you’re planning to use. Concrete pavers provide you with countless design options and pattern ideas, but in a cost-effective way.

Durability and Strength

Unlike most asphalt and tile pavements, concrete pavers are more resistant to cracks that can be caused by encroaching tree roots or extreme weather conditions. They are also manufactured to high standards, with an average thickness of 3 inches, making them durable and heat-reflective. Concrete pavers are also cost-effective as they can last up to 30+ years if properly maintained.

Concrete pavers are less costly to install because of the minimal labor required to set them up. It is easier to simply pour concrete over an area and stamp your desired pattern instead of having to place each tile or brick individually. Also, the raw materials used to make concrete pavers are cheaper. This cuts the costs by almost half, with the price only ranging from $8 to $18 per square foot.

Design Options

With concrete pavers, you can choose any pattern, shape, and color—from having a brushed finish to resembling tiles, bricks, or flagstones—anything is possible. They also have the ability to complement any architectural style or landscape. To further enhance the overall appeal of your patio, walkway, or driveway, concrete pavers may be combined with other landscape materials such as stone, gravel, or rocks.

After installation, you have the option of changing their colors without having to replace each piece individually. Just simply stain them using either reactive concrete stain or non-reactive concrete stain.

Ease of Maintenance

Aside from being durable and having longer life-spans, concrete pavers are also inexpensive and easy to maintain. Unlike other paving materials that shift over time, concrete pavers can remain stable for more than three decades.

They require very little routine maintenance, such as cleaning and resealing. Concrete pavers can be kept clean enough with just an occasional sweeping or hose rinsing of their surfaces. Readily available concrete cleaners can also remove any unwanted stains. If there are any weeds popping up through the surface of the pavers, just simply pluck them out and reseal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the frequently asked questions about concrete pavers.

What is cheaper to lay: concrete or pavers?

The upfront costs of installing pavers are higher compared to concrete, but their durability and longer life span accounts for the difference. Overall, concrete pavers are the most cost-effective option.

How much does it cost to install 1000 sq feet of pavers?

Prices may vary depending on the type of paver that’ll be used. However, on average, installing a 400-square foot paver could cost between $3,500 to $8,800. So, for a 1000-square feet of pavers, expect to pay at least $8,000 to $18,000.

Which is better: concrete or pavers?

In terms of price, concrete is less expensive to install. However, concrete is less durable than pavers, which means it’ll require more repairs over time resulting in a heftier bill. Pavers also offer more versatility in terms of design and patterns.

Ultimately, what matters most is your personal preference. Although, if you want to get the most value for your money, it is best to go with pavers.
