Patio Surfaces and Stepping Stone Materials

As one of the world’s hottest cities and driest states in the U.S., Las Vegas, NV has seen a staggering temperature increase of 5.7% over the past forty years. It has become increasingly clear that planners and builders should reimagine urban dwellings and landscape design in a sustainable and nature-friendly way.

Choosing the right paving material can help homeowners combat the urban heat, keep their spaces cool, as well as reduce energy and maintenance costs in the long run. Construction materials make a difference, and outdoor and indoor spaces have to be designed efficiently for the warming desert climate. It is important to consider climate requirements before making a selection, as certain materials may be inappropriate for extreme temperatures and icy or wet weather conditions.

The paving materials below are the most common options for landscaping projects, such as patio steps, walkways, retaining walls, and driveways.

Brick

Brick pavers have long been used as surfacing materials and are considered an environmentally friendly choice for fire pits, patios and walkways. This type of paver is made from shale material, sand and natural clay burnt in a kiln. Available in custom shapes, brick pavers can be cut and modified for specific projects. It is easy to install and is usually set onto a mortar and sand base. It lends a weathered look to hardscapes, but its color doesn’t fade even in prolonged use.

ProsCons
Comes in a classic red color, but a variety of earthy tones are availableRequires regular maintenance to extend its lifespan
Made from natural materials that can be reused and repurposedNeeds to be installed over a stable base, otherwise, it may crack or chip easily
Durable, stain-resistant and long-lasting (can last for over 40 years)

Concrete

Concrete pavers are blocks or slabs made from molded cement, aggregates and sand. This type of paver is a prevalent flooring option for steps, patios, walkways and driveways. It is easy to install as they can be placed in interlocking patterns. Light-colored concrete pavers are recommended as a sustainable, eco-friendly choice; manufacturers can customize colors based on your needs. Concrete pavers are more durable than poured concrete, and can resist deterioration from freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing chemicals.

ProsCons
Can handle heavy loads without succumbing to damagesArtificial pigments can fade over time
Long-lasting with a lifespan of over 30 years Can crack in extreme temperature fluctuations
Requires little maintenance Needs to be sealed regularly to prolong longevity

Natural Stone

Natural stone paving materials include sedimentary rocks like flagstone, bluestone, and travertine. Natural stones have been formed under pressure and changing temperatures, making them very sturdy and resistant to the elements. This is why they are a popular option for flooring and landscaping projects. They also don’t absorb heat, and are, therefore, environmentally-friendly.

ProsCons
Doesn’t heat up during extremely hot temperaturesSensitive to acids and cleaners with harsh chemicals
Affordable and cost-effective in terms of upfront costs and maintenanceHeavier than other types of pavers
Non-slip, making it suitable for areas where heavy rains and snowfall occur

Planning for Hardscape Steps or Walkways

Hardscapes are a critical aspect of a beautifully designed and functional landscape. It is essential to plan the layout and and installation of the hardscape elements.

All of the paving materials mentioned above have their place, depending on your home’s style and surrounding landscape. Begin by deciding on a pattern or style (e.g., jack-on-jack, herringbone, pinwheel, running bond), so you can estimate the materials needed for your project. Before you hire a landscaping company, you should also check local building codes and your homeowners’ association to learn more about the requirements and regulations that you need to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find some of the questions that we usually receive from our customers:

What is the best material to put under pavers?

Choosing the right material to anchor your pavers is as important as the pavers themselves. The base should be durable, allow proper water drainage, and have the appropriate thickness to remain even and stable for a long time. A combination of sand and crushed stone is ideal to use as a paver base for increased durability.

How do you install paver stepping stones?

Stone pavers save your lawn from being compacted and flattened by foot traffic. You can absolutely DIY the stepping stone path, provided that you do it correctly.

First is to establish the grade. Set up a stringline so you will have a fixed reference for the pavers’ height. Excavate where required, and add a suitable fill or base. Next, work out the distance between the pavers. Lay a wet concrete pad over the base, then lay the paver and tap it in. Sponge off the excess cement on the edges of the paver.

How far apart should stepping pavers be?

Stride out the placement of the paving stones prior to installing them. Steppers should not be too close together, so folks don’t end up shuffling along the walkway. A good spacing is 18 to 24 inches between centers to fit most people’s gait.

How do you keep stepping stones from sinking?

Pavers and stepping stones can settle and sink overtime due to moisture and foot traffic. Thus, they may have to be lifted from time to time and bolstered with sand or soil underneath. Most stepping stone pavers sit on a foundation of builder’s sand, but cement is also a great alternative that makes a rock-solid foundation.
